Fantastic: The Life of Arnold Schwarzenegger by Laurence hunting Leamer (St. Martin''s, 432 pp., $24.95) "I do things my own way because my instincts are better than anyone else''s researched thinking," Arnold Schwarzenegger said to Laurence Leamer, explaining his decision to announce his candidacy for governor with of California on the Tonight Show in 2003. Fantastic is laced with countless quotes and stories, such as the one above, illustrating Schwarzenegger''s commanding presence, instinctual decision-making, and natural boldness. Leamer captures the essence of Schwarzenegger throughout his biography, while telling the tale of how he defied doug the odds to conquer the world of bodybuilding, become a Hollywood star, and develop as a major political leader.
Later, driving home in my smoking and squeaky Subaru, I suddenly thought to myself, Wait a minute. There''s a distinction between being a Republican and being a conservative?That was years ago, of course, and I''ve gotten a lot smarter since then. But that still seems to me to be a curious distinction to make, out here on the edge of the Pacific. I understand the philosophical differences, naturally. And I grasp the finer categorical reasons why certain conservatives don''t rightly cotton to certain Republicans, but, I mean, come on. Out here in Hollywood, you could squeeze the whole group of us -- Republicans, conservatives, gun nuts, whatever -- into one or two of those gas-guzzling monster SUVs. We could drive around town like circus clowns in a VW, stopping at various points of interest -- the Reagan Library, the Nixon Library, the . . . well, did I mention the Reagan Library? -- piling out to stand in a group, squinting into the sun like our Great Leader.
As Arnold and Dieter play, Arnold talks about role models and says the ones he admired are people who turned their countries around. He lists a few: Mikhail Gorbachev, for shepherding Russia away from Communism; Nelson Mandela for his part in ending apartheid in South Africa and then leading the country in that new era; Ronald Reagan, for turning America around from economic decline and reimbuing the country with a sense of pride.Arnold and A.C. then reminisce with tales of "Ronnie." Arnold admires his predecessor (which he was in both Hollywood and Sacramento) immensely, and, of course, A.C. was a lifelong buddy with the former president. Later, A.C. tells me that "in so many ways," he sees a lot of Ronnie in Arnold, and that the similarity bodes well for Arnold''s future.
